A Beginner's Guide to Lab Diamond 4Cs
You've probably seen a lot of symbols like "E VVS2 Id Ex Ex" while browsing for the designer piece to ask for her hand in marriage. But are you familiar with its meaning? If not, then this is the perfect guide for you! 💚
4 Important Questions That the 4Cs Answer
Here is an example of an IGI Certificate. Let's break it down using this 1ct E VVS2 Id Ex Ex lab diamond as an example.
1. CARAT: How heavy and large is your brilliant jewel?
We begin with something that most of us are familiar with. "1ct" or "1 carat" refers to a lab diamond's Carat Weight. The higher the number, the heavier and larger the stone gets. This means that a 2ct gem is heavier and larger than a 1ct piece.

2. COLOR: How colorless is your center stone?
"E" is a lab diamond's Color Grade. This refers to IGI's rating of the gem's color or lack thereof. Ranging from D to Z, D is the most colorless of all, while Z is the grade for colored diamonds.

3. CLARITY: How many inclusions are in your lab diamond?
Meanwhile, "VVS2" refers to the Clarity Grade, measured by the amount of inclusions in a lab diamond jewel. The less amount and prominence they have, the higher the grade. Ranging from IF to I3, with Internally Flawless (IF) being the most clean and Included (I3) being one with the most blemishes.

4. CUT: How precise and symmetrical is your gemstone?
Finally, "Id" or Ideal refers to a lab diamond's Cut Rating. Ideal is the highest possible rating, only given to Round Cut lab diamonds. Excellent comes right after, which is the highest rating for Fancy Cut lab diamonds. The least ideal cut is rated as Fair, which refers to a dull and dark jewel.
Aside from its Cut, a lab diamond's Polish and Symmetry is also rated up to Excellent. This results in an Ex Ex or Double Excellent grade.
This is arguably the most important aspect of all four because it has the most effect on your forever piece's brilliance. A too shallow, too deep, or assymmetrical cut will produce a dull gemstone that looks dark and lackluster.
